The Virginias provide a sweetness balancing it all out. A delightful English blend that is never tiring or dull. Never after a meal, and never with Scotch. Very creamy and rich. The troubles arise from the cut. Today I took my trusty tin to work and was reminded of the delicious flavor of this high quality blend. Esoterica- Ramsgate 8 ounce. This is a very well balanced and blended tobacco, all the components can be easily identified and none overpower the other at any time they simply complement each other and make this tobacco a must have if you can find it. First, this isn't a review but a response. This truly is a complex blend. It's the most sublime smoke to ever enter my mouth. I'm not even going attempt to add anything to this already endless list of positive reviews. However, since I posted this online, you will have to hurry, before one of the other forum member beats you to it. Mild and rich in taste with hints of This blend sometimes requires more relights than others due to its cut and crumbly nature. : ). Lighting: Takes to burning easily, but does need a tamp or two before it settles down. Was this possible? It can be reminiscent of dried stonefruit if smoked delicately. It crumbles great, burns cool and even, and leaves an incredibly white and pure ash. Love the flake format. One word of caution however, unless your familiar with a Krumble Kake type of tobacco, take heed as to the method of loading your bowl, simular to DBE, in that the bowl can be over packed! After the crazy hunt and spending of a good amount of money, I managed to get my hands on a tin of Penzance which, according to the code on it (860C042) is from 2nd of April 2018, today being 25th of June 2021. Almost peppery, as if it had perique in it. It's a truly amazing smokesmooth, smokey, bacony, not your usual English blend, that's for sure. So I was finally given a chance to try the blend that seems to be the most legendary of any. On some days I consider this to be one of the most over-rated tobaccos on the market and can only watch with disbelief as its value rises on the vintage tobacco market. It reminds me of one of those mosquito repellant coils you lite up outside. Love it or hate it, it sure gets some interest. Appearance: Mine has started to develop some bloom (or plume) from aging. It's a hugely earthy flavor, as opposed to the leathery spice of SMM or the dynamic floral/herbal orientals of SL. Four stars, only because it is the max I can give it. I understand the annoyance about it's rarity (I haven't had or seen any in six years)but if found, is worth a try! Suffice to say, I "get it" this time around. You can even only smoke half the bowl and set it down until the next day and relight it and still get as nice a smoke as you did the day before. Anyway, The one thing I guess I could say is that this has a uniqueness in the flavor profile that I haven't found in any other blend except maybe Germaine's special Latakia flake. This is probably my sixth tin tried and can't reach the middle of the tin, again. One dimensional and not very good. I do find a slower smoke produces more flavor so mind your puffs, although it will never bite you. One de-caffeinated disappointment at a time, s'il vu plais; I haven't bothered with Stonehaven. And a few extra matches are a small price to pay for Penzance. To start with, this baccy crumbles with a grimacing look, no force needed. Tip-of-tongue sweetness throughout, more honey-like than sugar. Though I am firstly a VA smoker I will always reserve a spot in my bosoms for Penzance. I now prefer Astley's #99 for an all-day, any day latakia (and ease of use cut), but I can't imagine being without a tin of Penzance stashed somewhere for those evenings when I want some quality time with myself! This is very good and I can not realy add much to the other reviews(positive ones). I find the pleasant sour tang that appears now, a welcome development. Maybe one day another blender will come up with something which is comparable to Penzance, but nothing comes close to the 2010 batch I hadaccording to 1,000 or more pipers' opinions who say the same. The tin aroma is smokey and its appearance is predominantly dark, black in fact with some light strands here and there. It was a bit wet from the bag and took a bit to ignite, but it packed easily and burned perfectly. A fellow pipe-smoker friend of mine detests it but then he likes Petersen Aromatics such as Connoisseur's Choice which I find a touch shallow. I find the taste is not quite full, but is not an all-day smoke either. Almost impossible not to suck up pieces upon light up. I acquired a tin of Penzance because I wanted to compare it with two other blends. I smoked about a one ounce sample of this last spring/summer and treasured every pipeful. Once I got it started, though, it smoked like a champ. This allowed for a good smoke. Therefore, IMHO, Penzance merits only three stars. This is one blend/flake that I prefer smoking young without added age, as the flavors of the Latakia decrease dramatically after a few years. I love Penzance in my morta pipe: a great pairing of pipe and tobacco! Likewise, I feel that, even though there are doubtlessly some superb Virginias in this blend, they somehow are not allowed to shine forth with their full potential. Even then, a minimum effort was required to produce a clean, even burn to termination. Test Drive: When fire hit weed, it was apparent that Penzance was indeed a well made English. This is nothing more than a one dimensional Latakia bomb. When placed side by side Quiet Nights appeared darker whereas Penzance actually had a kind of very subtle scattered whiteness about it. I knownot everyone agrees with that, but you don't generate 300 reviews by being average and average tobaccos aren't out of stock half the time. If you can find the stuff give er a whirl, ya might like it but try not to harbor any unrealistic expectations of it, its just a very nice, expertly blended crumble cake. Spurred out into the tobacco wilderness by my beloved Balkan Sobranie getting low, I thought I had discovered an acceptable replacement in Bengal Slices, only to discover that it too is no more. Quiet Nights and Star of the East Flake are both excellent but different experiences. I found this to be a fairly dry-tasting tobacco, with a hint of saltiness, so I suspect at least some of the oriental is Yenidje. It has a strong/pungent aroma. This opened tin has been "breathing" for a month or so now. I must admit, I liked the smoke, a heavy dose of latakia laced aroma, that settled into a wonderful balance that made me savor it down to the dottle, which was as clean burning as I've ever experienced. There is a spicy, musty Turkish flavor in the background, and way down there is the Virginia. Was my heart pure enough? But honestly, this is not like what I thought in mind. Upon opening the plastic container and smelling what was inside (leather, smoke and earthiness) I could not wait to find the biggest pipe in my collection and enjoy a good book. The highest compliment I can make of this tobacco is that, more often than not, it does not even seem like smoking . Penzance brings back a lot of memories for me. The hype is sky-high but it's for a good reason. I was not disappointed; it is a terrifically satisfying smoke. One of my favorite thrills is the first bowl of a freshly popped tin. Preparation: The flakes practically fall apart in my hand, despite still being damp. When properly dried and packed, however, you end up with a nice English blend with a great Latakia punch that is best described as "round" and "creamy" on the tongue (no bite). Two days later, on a Sunday, I get a phone call. It makes me think of beef jerky. I discarded the remains of the container and policed up the spilled fines with a dust buster. It was not bold or complex. Light and it should puff up over the top of the bowl. I don't care about the just-ate-an-old-shoe-smothered-in-tobasco-and-capers breath that it gives me. Upon opening the tin, I enjoyed the smell. This doesn't effect my rating as I don't usually have a tin around long enough to worry about it, or it's relegated to the last two bowls of the tin. After 2 years it had crystals on it that reflect light. Not sure its worth the price on the second hand market, but I keep coming back to it. during the 1970s. The taste is light to medium a bit to light for my enjoyment. Definitely purchase some if you can find it. Finish: Finishes more heavily without being overwhelming. Great blend that loads well, lights easily, burns cool and dry to the bottom of the bowl. I won't be trying Penzance, ever again from a fresh or aged tin or pouch! If you like full Latakia blends, and haven't tried this, you really should. First, Latakia is smoky but exceptionally smooth, then the Virginias are dark, fermented, aged and yeasty. Just a fantastic smoke I can't get enough of. To be more specific regarding the iodine smell. I won't go into details, because there are no details to go into. The smoke was extremely woodsy from what must be a higher grade Latakia used back then. This is a big picture vs incredible attribute thing. It tasted like Cepacol sore throat spray and even had the same numbing effect on my mouth! this one reminds me a little bit of bow-legged bear from C&D, a tobacco i also enjoy very much. 4 stars. Meanwhile, the loamy and exotic, dominant Orientals develop a "sour" quality that gradually overtakes the initial non-cloying sweetness. You'll be glad it is. Burn rate really picks up. My bowl lasted nearly an houran hour of pure bliss. Too bad its so scarce. Now the tobacco was bone dry. Pease seems to have a slightly bolder and more separated flavor profile, while Penzance's flavors are a bit more subdued, yet melded together a bit more. As rich as Dunhill's Nightcap but with a much smoother and delicious flavor. I strongly suspect there is a flavoring agent in here. I can't comment on the quality of the packaging as I received some VERY generous samples of a few of the Esoterica blends in a trade with Gentleman Zombie; his review's been helpful to me too. The moisture level is about right to perhaps a little moist (nothing a few minutes won't fix). I did not detect any flavoring from the sniff. I like what's there, but it's missing something important to me. It simply might not be for you. The Latakia was noticable, but not in great quantity, as were the Orientals. But it's still excellent work, now one of my main go-to tobaccos.
